Prof. Dr. Habil. Eng. Oliviu Matei, operational lead of the COSA project, opened the Agri Innovation Summit with a synthesis of the project's vision and achievements after 36 months of work.
Vision: Smart agriculture, end to end
COSA built a complex IoT-based ecosystem for smart agriculture, connecting farmers, suppliers and producers in a complete, optimised and secure chain. The project was structured around four general objectives: (O1) an IoT infrastructure for agriculture — a sensor and actuator platform deployed in real fields; (O2) AI-based models for predicting environmental changes and crop conditions; (O3) a decision-support framework that translates data into actionable knowledge; and (O4) distributed data analysis with privacy-by-design through federated learning methodologies.
Practical applications
The COSA platform was validated on real terrain through three use cases — Use Case 1: Crop Yield Prediction & Land Bonitation (pedology + GIS + ML for dynamic bonitation and yield forecasting), Use Case 2: Aerial Crop Monitoring (drones with multispectral cameras + CNN models for disease and pest detection) and Use Case 3: Local Producer Marketplace (a digital marketplace and real-world testbed for routing optimisation). Validation was carried out on partner farms in the Lăpuș microregion (Maramureș).
Results in numbers
- 30+ scientific publications
- 6 Q1 articles
- 4 Q2 articles
- 5 PhD theses
- 1 patent application
- 2 public platforms in active use, plus the Local Producer Marketplace
Budget
Total project budget: 7,091,752.73 RON over 36 months (July 2023 – June 2026). Largest categories: personnel (62%), equipment (14%), indirect costs (8%), travel (6%), dissemination and publications (5%), materials and services (5%).
The opening address set the tone for a day dedicated to celebrating concrete results and pointing toward the next research and exploitation directions for COSA's outcomes.
