Sustainability of the Integrated Waste Management System: A Case Study of Bihor County, Romania

Abstract. Integrated waste management systems play a central role in advancing the circular economy and protecting the environment at regional level. This paper presents a case study of the integrated waste management system in Bihor County, Romania, with a focus on its sustainability across environmental, social and economic dimensions. The analysis covers the institutional framework, infrastructure, collection and treatment flows, separate collection performance and the evolution of key indicators over recent years. Strengths, weaknesses and opportunities for improvement are identified, and recommendations are formulated for enhancing the sustainability of the system in line with European and national policy targets.
